Practicing artists and designers are expected to cultivate the relationship of research, theory and history to their work, and, concurrently, art historians, theorists and curators are compelled to engage multiple visual platforms and environments beyond the traditional discourse of art.
The emphasis of our programs on interdisciplinary practice, supported by the University at Buffalo’s comprehensive research facility, is at the core of our departmental mission.

Given the interdisciplinary nature of the department, and our range of programs, we are looking for a wide variety of students. For those looking at our MA/PhD in Visual Studies, we are looking for individuals with backgrounds who want to use art to challenge the social norm. The MFA is designed to push the boundaries of creative inquiry and production. Our new MA in Critical Museum Studies is designed for those who know they want to pursue careers in museums and related spaces.
