What We Offer

Summary

The program of study at St. John's College is based on the belief that a genuine liberal education requires the study of great books because they express most originally and most deeply the ideas that have shaped our civilization. Under their guidance we can free ourselves from the blindness of prejudice and the narrowness of beaten paths. Under their discipline, we can learn to listen to reason.

Who We're Looking For

Summary

Our students come from diverse educational, professional, and demographic backgrounds, with a variety of personal, academic, and career ambitions. What unites them is a serious interest in fundamental human questions and the desire to pursue them through the collaborative study of timeless ideas and classic texts. They achieve a deepening understanding of themselves and the world they must navigate, while further developing the intellectual foundations and skills to do so. There are no specific prerequisites for our Master of Arts in Liberal Arts program. Applicants do need to have earned a Bachelor's degree before enrolling, but it could be in any academic field. However, applicant's should recognize that preparation for classes, involving substantial reading and a willingness to engage in classroom discussions with fellow students, is an essential part of our studies, where a large part of the responsibility for learning falls on the students themselves.
